Adyen Tap to Pay
Adyen N.V.
Enterprise-grade Tap to Pay through Adyen's unified commerce platform and SDKs.
Many Tap to Pay apps charge no mandatory monthly fee, letting you accept contactless payments with only a per-transaction cost. This pay-as-you-go model is ideal for businesses with variable sales volume, seasonal operations, or anyone who wants to avoid fixed monthly charges.
The apps below all offer a free tier with no monthly subscription. You'll still pay a percentage fee on each transaction (typically 1.5% to 2.9%), but there's no minimum monthly spend or recurring charge. Square is the most popular free option, with a full POS, invoicing and reporting at no monthly cost. Stripe and SumUp also charge zero monthly fees on their standard plans, while neobank-linked apps like Revolut and Monzo bundle free Tap to Pay with a business account.
Keep in mind that 'no monthly fee' doesn't mean zero cost — you pay per transaction, and those rates vary. Some providers offer paid plans with lower per-transaction fees if your volume is high enough to justify the monthly charge. Compare transaction rates on our cheapest apps page and check whether you need features like business reporting that might only be available on paid tiers.

Most free Tap to Pay apps charge no monthly subscription and no setup fees, but you do pay a percentage + sometimes a fixed amount per transaction. Some apps also charge for optional features like instant payouts, chargebacks or hardware accessories.
There's usually no catch — providers make money from the per-transaction fees. The trade-off is that free plans often have slightly higher transaction rates than paid plans, and advanced features (like detailed reporting or integrations) may be limited or require an upgrade.
If you process high volumes, a paid plan with a lower transaction rate can save money overall. Use a breakeven calculator: (monthly fee) ÷ (rate difference per transaction) = volume where paid plan becomes cheaper. For most small businesses, free plans are more cost-effective.
Most free Tap to Pay apps don't impose artificial transaction volume limits, but they do have per-transaction limits (typically $5,000–$10,000 per tap) and may require additional verification for high-volume accounts.
